What to Do After Receiving Your University Admission Letter
Verify your university offer, meet acceptance deadlines, organise fees and accommodation, and prepare for registration with this Ghana freshers’ checklist.
An admission letter is the start of several practical steps. Before paying or travelling, confirm the offer through the university’s official admission portal. Then work through acceptance, funding, accommodation and registration as separate tasks, each with its own instructions and deadline.
Verify the offer and read every condition
Check your name, programme, campus, study mode and academic year. Note whether the offer is conditional and which documents or results are outstanding. Contact admissions using details on the university’s website if anything is wrong. A forwarded screenshot or call from an agent is not enough to establish an offer.
Save the letter and keep a simple list of deadlines. If a condition is unclear, ask before the acceptance deadline rather than assuming it can be sorted out after arrival.
Accept through the official process
Follow the stated acceptance steps, including any required confirmation or payment. Verify the recipient and reference instructions independently if a message asks you to pay somewhere different. Retain the official receipt and check whether the payment appears in your university account.
If you cannot meet a deadline, ask admissions about the available options before it passes. A pending request is not an approved extension. Likewise, deferral requires the university’s agreement; do not simply miss reporting and assume your place is reserved.
Build a funding plan before committing
Separate academic fees, housing, arrival expenses and monthly living costs. Use our student budget example and explore official financial-aid sources if there is a gap. Confirm any approved instalment arrangement directly with the university. A loan or scholarship application is not confirmed funding.
Arrange accommodation independently
Read the university’s housing instructions and confirm whether a bed has actually been allocated. UG’s accommodation guidance makes clear that admission does not automatically include campus housing. If you need private accommodation, use our hostel inspection and payment checklist before reserving a room.
Prepare your records and registration
Organise the documents named in your letter, with secure copies and backups. Check how your student number and official email are issued. Follow any medical, orientation or other clearance instructions applicable to your programme.
Obtain the correct course list from your department and complete academic registration through the official portal. Keep the final registration record. Paying fees or attending orientation does not necessarily register your courses.
Plan the first week
Confirm reporting and orientation dates, travel arrangements and a contact for arrival problems. Use the freshers’ documents and packing checklist and online course-registration guide. Once your timetable is available, set aside regular study blocks rather than waiting for the first quiz.
For institution-specific instructions, consult official sources such as the KNUST freshers’ guide. SellePins’ guides support planning but cannot accept an offer, extend a deadline or allocate a room on the university’s behalf.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to buy another application form after admission?
Not simply because you received an offer. Follow the university’s acceptance instructions and verify any request for another purchase.
Can I defer my admission?
Ask your university about its deferral process and obtain approval. Missing reporting is not the same as an approved deferral.
