Start your hostel search with your campus and lecture location, budget and required move-in date. A room described as “close to the university” may still involve a long daily journey. Admission and accommodation are separate decisions, and a social-media advert is not proof that a bed exists or that the person posting it can collect payment.

Check the university route first

Read the KNUST freshers’ guide, UG accommodation information or UCC registration instructions as appropriate. Follow the current instructions for your admission year and student category.

UG explicitly states that admission does not automatically include on-campus accommodation and warns against third-party bed payments. Use official university platforms for university housing. Private housing is a separate arrangement that requires its own checks.

Choose by journey, not just neighbourhood name

For KNUST, compare the actual route to your teaching area rather than relying on “near campus”. For Legon, consider the relevant gate, class location and transport connection. For UCC, confirm which campus and facilities you will use before choosing a room. Visit at a realistic commuting time where possible.

Measure walking or transport time, return options after evening activities and the cost over a full term. A cheaper room can cost more overall if transport and time increase substantially.

Inspect the room and shared facilities

  • Confirm the room number, number of occupants and bed space being offered.
  • Check doors, windows, locks, lighting and emergency exits.
  • Ask about water supply, sanitation, electricity billing and backup arrangements.
  • Inspect study space, ventilation, noise and internet availability.
  • Read cooking, visitor, security and maintenance rules.

Speak to current residents where possible and ask how repairs are handled. Photos can help shortlist rooms, but they do not replace an inspection by you or a trusted person.

Get the full price in writing

Ask whether the quoted amount covers a semester, academic year or other period. Clarify deposits, utilities, cleaning, service charges, reservation expiry and refund terms. Record the move-in and move-out dates and what happens during vacations.

For comparison, add rent, compulsory charges and expected transport. Keep upfront payments separate from monthly living costs. Our budgeting example explains why dividing rent into monthly amounts does not change the provider’s payment deadline.

Verify before paying

Confirm the provider’s identity and authority to let the room. Obtain written terms describing the exact accommodation and verify the payment recipient through a trusted, independently confirmed channel. Do not pay because someone claims a room will disappear in the next ten minutes.

Request a receipt and keep the agreement, correspondence and payment record. If a purported university bed is being resold by an individual, check directly with the housing office before proceeding.

Prepare for moving day

Photograph the room’s condition with permission, record existing damage and confirm keys and contact details. Use our freshers’ packing checklist and student budget guide. Follow up with the university if accommodation problems affect your arrival; do not assume a hostel issue changes academic registration deadlines.

Frequently asked questions

Does admission guarantee a hostel bed?

No. Follow your university’s accommodation process and arrange an alternative if a room has not been confirmed.

Should I pay before inspecting?

Inspect personally or through a trusted person and verify the provider, room and written terms before committing money.
