University Cut-Off Points vs Minimum Entry Requirements in Ghana
Understand the difference between minimum admission requirements and programme cut-off points, with a worked example and an official-source checklist.
Separate eligibility from programme selection
Minimum entry requirements describe the baseline qualifications an applicant must satisfy for an admission route. A programme’s cut-off helps explain the academic threshold used or published for that programme and category. Read both before deciding whether an application is suitable.
Two students can meet a university’s general entry requirements but face different selection conditions because they chose different programmes, study modes or application categories.
Worked example: a general threshold and a tighter programme threshold
Imagine a hypothetical university route with a general aggregate limit of 36, while a particular programme publishes a threshold of 15. An applicant with aggregate 21 may meet the broad aggregate condition but fall outside the programme’s stated threshold.
These numbers illustrate the distinction and are not a current cut-off for any named university. The applicant should read the actual programme table, check compulsory subject grades and consider suitable alternatives.
Now imagine aggregate 12 but a missing required elective. A strong total still leaves that subject condition unresolved. Aggregate and subject eligibility must be checked together.
How to read a published cut-off table
UG’s official table separates programme entries into columns such as first choice and fee paying, with additional subject requirements. A number taken from the wrong column can give a misleading comparison. Read UG’s official cut-off table.
- Identify the institution and admission cycle.
- Find the exact programme and qualification.
- Read the correct category or study-mode column.
- Check notes, symbols and named subject conditions.
- Ask admissions about any unclear or undated information.

Avoid common interpretation errors
Do not treat a previous cycle’s published threshold as a promise for a future intake. Keep the date and context when saving a table. A screenshot without its heading, notes or source can lose the information needed to interpret it.
Fee-paying and regular categories may have different conditions and costs. Selecting a different category should be a decision based on eligibility and affordability, with the complete fee schedule reviewed.
When the university has not published a verified programme threshold, write down what is confirmed and what remains unknown. A made-up estimate can lead you to exclude a suitable option or spend money on an unsuitable one.
What the UniAdmission Checker percentage means
The checker’s requirements-match score is calculated from the listed general checks passed. For example, six of seven checks gives 86% after rounding. That describes the check results; it does not mean 86 out of 100 comparable applicants will receive admission.
A 100% match means all listed checks were met. Programme-specific electives, competitive selection, interviews and available places can still affect the university’s decision. Use the displayed breakdown to identify what to verify next.
