Choose a qualification that supports your goal

Degree, Diploma and Certificate programmes serve different study and career purposes. The best starting point is the work you want to do, the entry requirements you meet and the resources you can commit. The qualification title alone does not tell you every course’s duration, depth or progression arrangements.

Ask for the programme’s exact name, awarding institution and current admission information. A short professional certificate, a technical certificate and a university entry certificate may have very different purposes.

Compare the routes before applying

RouteWhat to investigateProgression question
DegreeRequired credits, relevant electives, aggregate and programme selection conditionsDoes it meet your intended profession’s training requirements?
DiplomaSpecific pass/credit pattern, practical content and qualification typeWhich Degree programmes accept this award, and at what entry level?
CertificateExact award, entry qualifications, practical skills and recognitionIs there a documented route into a Diploma or further study?

Compare learning outcomes and assessment methods alongside fees. A lower application fee alone says little about the cost or suitability of the whole programme.

Why qualification level changes a grade check

UMaT publishes a Certificate route requiring five passes through E8, including English, Mathematics and Integrated Science. Its Diploma requirements use a different pattern and named elective subjects. UMaT Certificate requirements and Diploma requirements.

These are examples of institution-specific routes. When comparing another university, read its own published conditions. Avoid applying one school’s thresholds across every Certificate or Diploma in Ghana.

Three applicant scenarios

Strong grades and a clear professional goal: start with the relevant Degree programmes, then compare their compulsory subjects and additional selection requirements.

One core grade below the Degree threshold: investigate a suitable Diploma route and compare it with the time and cost of a focused resit. Ask whether the Diploma offers a documented pathway to your eventual goal.

A practical skills goal: examine the Certificate’s training content, equipment, assessment and recognition. Ask potential employers or the relevant professional body whether the award meets the intended purpose.

Build a full cost and time comparison

Record tuition, transport, accommodation, materials, practical work costs and time away from employment. Ask about attendance expectations for distance, weekend and regular study. An affordable programme still needs to be manageable alongside your other responsibilities.

Request written progression guidance. Check the required final classification, credit transfers, entry level and whether an additional application is necessary. Plan for the possibility that progression conditions may change.

Check your grades, then select the right form

UniAdmission Checker displays supported qualification levels for each institution and explains its general grade checks. Use the assessment to organise your questions, then confirm the specific programme conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Is Certificate entry automatically easier everywhere?
Requirements vary by award and institution. Check the named course rather than ranking all qualifications by their title.
Does a Diploma guarantee entry into a Degree?
Progression depends on the receiving institution’s rules, the qualification and your performance.
